For the record, there are in fact larger previews used in the dolphin sidebar, as I saw
this commit today:

don't cache the preview of the information sidebar, as this restricts the maximum size to 256 x 256 pixels
 M  +1 -1      infosidebarpage.cpp  

-> another reason for being able to generate previews at any size, without on-disk caching.
