If we had a "best practices" document this would be best there, but
since we don't have it and it's tiny adding it to the spec seems OK.
There's a world of difference between SHOULD and MUST though, and
that's my primary concern.

If someone makes a patch which summarizes things concisely, I'll
figure out where on the freedesktop servers the document lives and
update it.
