Hello,
I am bringing this discussion to the xdg mailing list that I started with
Rodney Dowes regarding adding the "<3" emoticon to the Icon Naming Scheme
as a heart. Reproduced below is our conversation to get the conversation
started here and (hopefully) completed.

Subject: Icon Naming Specification proposal - add "<3" to emotes
Hello Rodney,
I am emailing you because I recently reported a bug against Empathy to
include an icon for "<3" (a heart). Guillaume, an Empathy developer,
responded saying that they use the Icon Naming Specification and maybe I
should propose to have "<3" added to that.
Please take this as my proposal for that addition to the "Emotion" icons.
The bug can be found here:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=610899
I see that the only icons identified within the emotion section are
faces; this would obviously be a change of course. But, I do believe/feel
that it would be a welcomed deviation/addition.
Why do I make this proposal? Honestly, because many popular IM clients
(from gtalk's gmail interface to pidgin) support this emoticon and thus
people use it with the belief that the receipient will see it rendered.
Yes, I also think that all IM/Chat clients should support the same icon
specification (and INS is a good candidate!), but this would be a useful
addition to INS regardless.
All the best,
Greg
