I don't know all the details about the MIME spec, but I'd recommend how
it's implemented in glib and qt. For glib, see
g_app_info_get_default_for_type() and
get_all_desktop_entries_for_mime_type() in
http://git.gnome.org/browse/glib/tree/gio/gdesktopappinfo.c
