Subject: Proposal for a Desktop Environment-Agnostic Standard for Configuring
 Login Manager Settings
Message-ID: <65c149d8-cb52-4d9c-8de0-f1aa720951cd@gmail.com>

Hello everyone,

I would like to propose the creation of a new standard that allows for
consistent and desktop environment-independent configuration of login
manager settings.

Currently, the way login manager settings (such as autologin, session
selection, and theme configuration) are handled varies significantly
between different desktop environments and display managers. This often
leads to fragmentation, duplicated efforts, and confusion for users and
developers alike.

My proposal is to define a shared specification or configuration
interface that can be used by all login managers and desktop
environments to read and apply these common settings. Such a standard
would promote better interoperability, simplify system configuration
(especially for distributions and system integrators), and improve the
overall user experience.

If there is already work being done in this direction, I would be very
interested in learning more and potentially contributing. Otherwise, I
would be happy to help develop a draft specification and engage in
discussions with the community.

Thank you for your time and for your continued work on improving the
Linux desktop ecosystem.

Best regards,
Philippe
