------- Additional Comments From J.Breuer at gmx-topmail.de 2004-04-21 23:15 -------
On a hunch I disabled the DGA extension in my installation of X.org 6.7.0, (made
sure it really is disabled - if there is a 'LoadModule "extmods"' statement in
the appropriate Section at all the DGA disabling clause gets overridden), and
tested VMWare some more.
With DGA disabled, the described hang does *not* occur. (VMWare definitely uses
DGA, as it complains about its absence if it has been disabled). VMWare has been
running without a problem for some hours on machine #1, part of the time with
"Acceleration" disabled, partly with "Acceleration" enabled; all of the time
with DGA disabled.
This leads to the assumption that the DGA extension as shipped with X.org 6.7.0
is not as compatible with XFree86's DGA extension as VMWare would like it to be.
Leaving DGA disabled cannot be considered a workaround, as it imposes loss of
performance and functionality (full-screen mode) on the use of VMWare.
