Problem resolved.

Thanks to Christian Zietz for pointing out this line in my X log file:
"Size of device LFP (local flat panel) is 640 x 480"

Down in the BIOS, 'Advanced Chipset Features', there is a line for "Boot
Display".  Choices include AUTO, CRT, LCD, CRT+LCD, DVI, TV, CRT+DVI
It occured to me that in this context, LCD did not refer to the VGA monitor I
had attached, but to the internal LVDS connector. I changed the Boot Display
setting from AUTO to CRT and I now have higher resolution.
