Can you try with cvs prior to Hui's r400 support patch?  I think that's what
broke it.  I think the display handling code committed was incomplete (it was a
partial merge of Hui's original code drop for r400 support and better display
handling). Someone probably needs to fully merge the original revamped display
handling patch.  It's complicated since the patch is substantial and it was
against xorg prior to the the DRI merge and now that part of it was merged it's
even more complicated.  I started to a while back, but lack of time has
prevented me from finishing it.  The patch in question is here:

I may get to it one of these days, but I can't make any promises.  if someone
