I'm having the same problem here with two radeon cards (one AGP, the other PCI).
Below is the two cars I'm using. 

0000:00:0f.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon RV100 QY
[Radeon 7000/VE]
0000:01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon R100 QD
[Radeon 7200]

I did the suggestion of using MonitorLayout in the config, and after that X
would try to start up, then segfault :(. I'm going to try rebooting and seeing
if that helps. If you'd like, I can post the Xorg log file. Btw, I'm running
6.8.0. There's a followup bug on gentoo's bug site concerning this:
