Confirmed on athlon-xp Gentoo Linux with both via and nforce2 chipsets.
Switching to "evdev" protocol appears to be helping.  still no idea what is
causing this or why it is happening.  interesting note?   logging out via use of
just the mouse, gdm loads up and the keyboard works again.   repeatable, sort
of.  WTF?
