I am now using Gentoo's x.org 6.8.0-r1, which has some additional patches in 
it.  I have also recently upgraded to gcc-3.4... Somewhere in these two the 
problem was fixed. 
 
The changelog for x.org 6.8.0-r1 is at 
http://packages.gentoo.org/ebuilds/?xorg-x11-6.8.0-r1 but I can't see anything 
specifically relating to our problem. 
 
Performance is fine under this version.
