Matthias, thank you for testing the patches!  You've confirmed what I think
several of us suspected -- that there are two completely separate problems with
font rendering.  One that I've fixed (confirmed by Giacomo), and one that you've
discovered.  Unfortunately, the rendering problems that you're seeing I have not
been able to reproduce, so I won't be able to help you fix them until I can
figure out how to do that.

I will go ahead and check in my change to HEAD since it fixes one of the two
separate problems we've found here.
