Summary: Presence of a second head is only checked at server
                    startup
           Product: xorg
           Version: 6.8.1
          Platform: PC
        OS/Version: Linux
            Status: NEW
          Severity: enhancement
          Priority: P2
         Component: Driver/Radeon
        AssignedTo: xorg-bugzilla-noise at freedesktop.org
        ReportedBy: d.burrows4 at verizon.net

I recently installed X.org, and discovered to my delight that it fixed some of
my longstanding complaints with the XFree86 driver on my Radeon IGP card: I no
longer get screen corruption on the second head, my laptop's LCD panel switches
off when the second head is plugged in, and DRI seems to work! Naturally,
therefore, I have new complaints to bring forward ;-)

Now that I can use the second head (an external CRT) in a clone mode, the fact
that the driver (apparently) only checks for the presence of the CRT on startup
is getting a bit annoying. In particular, I'd like to be able to unplug the
laptop and carry it somewhere else to work. Unfortunately, if I do this, the
LCD remains disabled until I kill the X server and restart it. :-( This means,
of course, that I have to kill all the software that's running in my X session.
I would like to be able to unplug (and preferably also plug in) an external
monitor and have the X server switch between the panel and the other monitor as
I do so. I'm pretty sure this worked in That Other Operating System, so the
hardware must be able to handle it.
