from gzip homepage :

gzip produces files with a .gz extension.
gunzip can decompress files created by gzip, compress or pack.
gzip was developed as a replacement for compress because of the UNISYS and IBM
patents covering the LZW algorithm used by compress.

so, gzip misses the .Z creation

zlib only does gz/LZ77
