Finally I have got a free afternoon, so I compiled HEAD with this patch, I
tested the system for an hour and as far as I can tell the glitches I was
experiencing before are gone, with both direct rendering enabled and disabled.
The only exception is openoffice-ximian, but as matters stand I think this is a
bug in their code.
