why not?

looking at Dan's patches I'd rather be bump the abi each time we break.*

Otherwise, bisecting becomes rather entertaining as you don't know if a
given ABI already has a certain change in it or not.
For example, ABI_XINPUT_VERSION 8 doesn't need code changes, with Dan's
patches merged the drivers need updating**. So I'd rather the drivers have a
check for the real number that introduced a change in there. If 1.7 was any
indication, making it harder to bisect is a bad idea.
