Although I haven't build-tested this patchset, the changes overall look

and Makefiles.

While I'm pretty sure some things will break once it's applied
(--as-needed, linker subtleties, God knows what else...), I think those
patches should definitely go in first once master reopens after 1.9.

The lib reordering in the first patch may be a source of trouble. Other
than that, I didn't spot anything wrong with this patchset.
