[PATCH xserver] configure: use backticks rather than $() for commands

It worked, the CC is not removed, the alias was causing trouble, but
only when going through the list. Earlier, when I issued a patch to the
list and copied Alan, it worked because I had not set an alias for his
e-mail address.
