That is indeed the whole point -- giving it a basic structure. I am suggesting
the basic structure is built around the concept of contacts.

The first step is an important one. I doubt the solution will be
forward-compatible unless the basic concept is put in place from the start. The
basic concept is point contacts appearing and disappearing, so why not formulate
  the interface in such terms.
