This seems like a reasonable plan to me, although it does change the
API, and hence is nominally against the X server 'no ABI/API changes
after the merge window' policy.

I'd like our official API/ABI manager (Aaron Plattner) to weigh in on
whether this should wait for 1.13 or not.
