I'd suggest disabling -Wshadow on that compiler until you get a chance
to upgrade.

Compiling with 4.6 here, I'm not seeing any of the other warnings you
mention, just 225 -Wshadow warnings. I appear to have gcc versions 4.4,
4.6, 4.7 and 4.8 installed this evening. I suspect I could remove some
of those...
