Hello Keith,
i would suggest to branch the tree into a libX11-next (feel free to choose an
other name). The linux kernel does this since some years and it seems working.
Distribution can play with that and check if something unusual happens.
Of cause at some point someone needs to transfer it into xorg tree but at least
that would make sure the patches have a place the go and may encourage much needed
developers come forward with more fixes.
