Would you like to raise an issue with Meson about that?

I don't see anything relevant in

Another question is, why should a tar-ball be used for long-term
archiving, when surely the development history is much more valuable
and that is in git?

IOW, we should probably be more worried about the long-term archiving
properties of git repositories, if we are worried about long-term at
all.
