I wonder if it's a bug in your monitor's edid?  Maybe it actually prefers
-hsync.  Not sure why it would only have a problem on one encoder however. 
Does the hard-coded mode also work on the other (previously working) DVI port? 
FWIW, the 1920x1200 monitor I (Dell LCD), has the same preferred modeline in
it's edid, however, it works fine on either DVI port on my RV730 card.
