So that's actually the reverse case from what I thought - the X driver
has KMS support, but it's not enabled in the kernel. Check dmesg for why
the DRI (and consequently acceleration) initialization fails, maybe some
firmware file is missing.
Not sure then why VT switching to console doesn't work though.

I still don't see any explanation for or even sign of a crash. I think
Ubuntu's gdm has some kind of watchdog, maybe that just thinks the X
server is taking too long to start up and kills it.
