sorry to bother you, but this has no impact. the weird thing is that X 
accepts thee DDCMode option:

(**) RADEON(0): Option "DDCMode" "off"

but then X loads it anyway:

(II) RADEON(0): AGP card detected
(II) Loading sub module "ddc"
(II) LoadModule: "ddc"

and probes the monitor...

???
