[Xorg] Understanding Xserver?

I have started a project on Xserver. I should make some study and
modification on it (to run java display manager with 3D effect). Therefore I
need to understand it as well.

What did you advise me to start with? I know it is a big project, but it is
possible to understand it.

 

I have not used before Xlib directly.

Surely I do not need to change something in driver section and I also want
not change on original code as possible as I can. It will be better if I
make my modification as modules.

 

Therefore I need information like where Events are defined and the whole X
protocol .etc.
