No, we think it's acceptable to let users build the system in a variety of
environments, especially environments which are prevalent in the
environment today.
People stuck with core-font based applications in asian environments would
be encouraged to either switch to FreeType 2.1.8 or use our included
version. The only question is whether we should *allow* people with older
versions of FreeType to build the system the old way.
By your argument, we should be shipping custom C libraries and a custom
operating system kernel so everyone would have the benefits of the "right"
versions of those as well.
A one-size-fits-all solution is not acceptable here; people have a variety
of reasons for using various verisons of libraries, our job is to make
sure our code runs in most "reasonable" environments.
This problem doesn't seem hard to fix. Let's just get it done and move on.
