I'm thinking adding an XInput device would be straightforward, and what 
we'll want to do is let clients find out which physical device(s) are 
associated with the core pointer -- every device will be an 'extension' 
device and some subset will be mapped to the 'core' pointer.  That just 
means we'll want to modify things so that clients can both tell which 
physical devices are connected to the core pointer and what the union of 
those capabilities are.
