Keyboard problem Dell Inspiron 1100 with X.org 6.8.0

After upgrading from xorg-x11-6.7.0-r2 (Gentoo) to xorg-x11-6.8.0 on a Dell 
Inspiron 1100 laptop, the X server refuses to start, claiming that it cannot 
find a core keyboard. The log file (attached) contains the line
(EE) PreInit failed for input device "Keyboard[0]".

Reverting to 6.7.0, everything is still ok. I changed the driver from "kbd" to 
"keyboard" in the 6.8.0 config file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf), but this had no 
effect.

An upgrade to 6.8.0 on a similarly configured desktop Gentoo box worked fine.

Any ideas?
