xorg 6.8.2 vs nvidia 7174

We're two people so far with this issue. Both have built xorg 6.8.2 on a
rather non-standard system, from source. The nvidia module seems fine and
loads, but X complains about (EE) not able to load the nvidia module.

There seems to be no useful ideas from the nvidia crowd, so I thought I'd
run this by you.
