Why X protocol/server forbid zero width/height?

What would be the point? Applications will still have to have code to
work around existing servers that do have this constraint, and we'd have
to test a whole pile of code in the server which may well assume
non-zero dimensions. This will just mean additional work on both sides
of the wire, for no net benefit.

You can simulate zero-sized windows with the Shape extension by setting
the Bounding shape to an empty region.
