Handling EDID info

Couple of questions:

(1) does anyone have a Perl (or Python) script to disassemble the
    hex debugging dump of the EDID information read by the X
    server?

(2) how does one munge EDID information into something usable
    (i.e. a modeline) when the monitor comes back and says that it
    has geometry that isn't quite kosher (like not being a multiple of
    eight, etc)?  Are there any good rules of thumb for which values
    need to get pushed in which direction?
