There must be something wrong in your setup.   GTK apps run fine on
Solaris Xsun, which uses completely different keycode values than
XFree86/Xorg does.    (Except for a few broken ones like the GNOME
applet to load keytable layouts from xmodmap files, but those are
simply designed to be broken.)
