I'm getting artifacts too with CVS from yesterday. These artifacts disappear 
when _disabling_ RenderAccel in xorg.conf (but then things are of course 
slower).

Just out of curiosity, could you check what happens in your case when you add 
the line

Option      "RenderAccel" "off"

to your xorg's card section?
