bbitmap Xserver module dropped?

Hi

I recognized recently, that with xorg-server 1.1.99.3 (and maybe even
before) the bitmap Xserver module is no longer available. But using
bitmap fonts is still possible. :-)

Which module is now responsible for rendering bitmap fonts? Is it
freetype?  Assuming that it is freetype, is now reencoding to legacy
encodings on-the-fly supported? So it would be sufficient to install
only the bitmaps fonts in unicode encoding and use mkfontscale without
"-l" option to also generate the XLFDs for legacy encodings for the
unicode bitmap fonts?

Just being curious ...
