i915GM at 1280x768 on external monitor

I've gotten lost in the various branches and work in progress.

I want to run the VGA port of my 915GM based laptop at 1280x768. I don't 
really care what happens on the LCD. It can be off, it can run in 
virtual mode.

I've tried variations of xorg.conf, I've tried hard coding my res into 
the bios detection code. Still no success.

Is there anything known to work?
