Being a Gentoo user, I can forward you to the following page:

It says that the I855GM 'works great', though I don't know if the
I855GME also works great. You'd think so.
We have about 40 I845G systems here at work, and I've never been able to
run compiz on an AIGLX server - I just get segfaults. There are notes on
the above page about some workarounds, but these don't work for me :( Oh
well. XGL works, but on these chips, it's just a *little* too slow to be
usable.
