Before critizing the driver have you double checked that acceleration was
enabled. Does glxinfo tell you direct rendering yes ? If it tells no check the
output of (at the top):
LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose glxinfo
Also check that in your xorg log you got direct rendering enabled message.
Btw glxgears isn't a benchmark. I don't know much about 3dmark but i would
think that running it under wine will impact is performance.
