Ugh.  The way we're calling sed is:

sed -ne 's/^\([[^\.]]\+\).*/\1/p'
sed -ne 's/^\([[^\.]]\+\)\.\([[^\.]]\+\).*/\2/p'
sed -ne 's/^\([[^\.]]\+\)\.\([[^\.]]\+\)\.\([[^\.]]\+\).*/\3/p'

Do you know what part of that Solaris sed is unhappy with?
