Keymap problems

On three boxes I've recently installed Xorg using the jhbuild 
instructions.  Everything went smoothly, other than a handful of input 
drivers that refused to build.  Unfortunately, on all three machines I get:

(WW) Couldn't load XKB keymap, falling back to pre-XKB keymap

And then the control key is nearly useless.  I have the 
/opt/xorg/lib/X11/xkb directory with the following contents:

/opt/xorg/bin/xkbcomp exists, and I've even added /opt/xorg/lib to my 
ld.so.conf file to make sure it links against the newer libraries. 

Unfortunately, that still does no good.
