nv performance

Hi,
what is the best way to get good 2d performance out of an geforce 2mx card? 
Until an hour ago I was running a radeon 9500pro that had some performance 
issues (that have been discussed on this list) but otherwise worked ok. 
Unfortunately the fan on the card failed and I decided to pull out an old 
gforce card only to find that this card runs even slower than the 9500pro. 
Is there some option I need to set to get at least some decent performance 
out of this card?
