S3 driver in 7.0.0 is broken

I installed Ubuntu 6.06 twice and used the live CD once and I keep
hitting this bug: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7112

The VESA driver works. All previous versions of the X server since 2002
have worked until 7.0.0.

Now I'm running Ubuntu 5.10's xserver-org 6.8.2.

I imagine not many people have these cards anymore, so if there is
anything I can do to help find out why it freezes, let me know.
