You don't really need Mesa CVS, the radeon kernel drm module is
sufficient (if you don't plan on running 3d apps).
It should work without drm, but the driver xv (and xaa too) use very
different methods of uploading data if dri is enabled or not (in
particular xv should be faster with drm).
Though if you have a x300, you probably need the patch from here,
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5413, as otherwise the pci
id is probably not recognized.
