Right, the 965 dispensed with the video overlay. This is the only Intel
graphics adapter without an overlay; the overlay takes a large number of
transistors and consumes memory bandwidth during video refresh, so
textured video is actually better in most ways, especially in composited
desktop environments.
Video overlays do generally have fairly long scaling filters, so their
output is often smoother looking when scaled up by a large factor. It
would be fun to create a larger filter for the 965 textured video
adapter and see how much that improves the quality.
