I didn't look really closely, but I'm guessing this is the modesetting
branch of the driver (which RedHat is shipping on Rawhide, iirc), which
is known to not (yet) work on i830-based laptops. Those chips are unique
in not having any native support for the LVDS panel and instead relying
on an external DVO-connected LVDS controller.

The workaround is to use the BIOS-based driver until the LVDS over DVO
support is working.
