I think it's the reboot and not the kernel update, which fixes this
issue. At least this was my experience I had with a Mac Mini some days
ago.

I never tried the modesetting branch of the i810 driver, but I'm
assuming that you still need to provide a modeline for such a mode. Is
it specified in your xorg.conf and accepted by the server/driver?
