messa and glXGetProcAddressARB problem

Ive got the latest mesa source from cvs, and all goes well during the 
build until this:

checking for XDRIINFO... yes
checking for library containing glXGetProcAddressARB... no
***** autogen failed on app/xdriinfo
***** make failed on app/xdriinfo
***** clean failed on app/xdriinfo
***** dist failed on app/xdriinfo
***** distcheck failed on app/xdriinfo
***** install failed on app/xdriinfo
Building app module component xedit...

Is X expecting me to have mesa built ? i cant do that without X, so am 
confused.  Any help apreciated.
