Is it just your program that is a problem? What is your glxgears 'score'?

Simply because of this problem, the first suggestion I received was to try
the latest GIT version, so I did. It was just the same before, with the version in 'debian sid' and in 'debian experimental'

Ok I tried that, no change!

Certainly, it is helping rule out some things that I was not aware of like that Legacy3D .. I had high hope for that once you mentioned it, since maybe 'processing' might be using some older functions to carry out the operations. I am not entirely sure about Simon's tutorial example I mentioned any more, there's some disk access slowing it down so maybe I am back to this, the way processing uses opengl? So maybe I need to learn to use opengl directly from a C program .
