Some monitors (yes, LCD ones, over DVI) report preferred modelines that
can only be used with dual link cards - but will happily accept reduced
blanking modes. With reduced blanking you can go up to 1920x1200 at 60Hz,
which needs 154MHz.
But you might end up having to tweak your xorg.conf manually. I don't
know if the driver already falls back to reduced timing modes, if the
monitor doesn't specify one, and the card doesn't have a dual link
outlet. Which would be arguably the right solution.
